Torrential downpour of currency at the Ice Hockey Championship - The prizes have been revealed!
Germany makes it to the best eight teams at a World Cup for the fifth time in a row, last getting knocked out at the 2018 World Cup in Denmark. Captain Moritz Müller is ecstatic, stating, "I'm thrilled we've accomplished this again, even ahead of schedule. The quarter-finals in a World Cup are far from a certainty."
The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) dishes out 7.5 million US dollars (6.91 million euros) in bonuses for the knockout games. Compared to soccer, this is a drop in the bucket: Uefa has already paid out 9.25 million euros to each team for the 2024 European Championships.
Reaching the $500K mark
Germany's national ice hockey team has already scored half a million dollars (460,000 euros) by making it to the World Cup's quarter-finals. There could be even more in store for them. There's 1.1 million dollars (1.01 million euros) for the World Cup championship title, $950,000 (874,000 euros) for second place, $920,000 (846,000 euros) for third place, and $890,000 (819,000 euros) for fourth place.
The world federation refers to these bonuses as "development money." Their intention is to support the growth of ice hockey in each country.
So, what happens to the funds?
Every player receives about 15,000 euros for reaching the quarter-finals. The World Championship title would fetch approximately 30,000 euros. The team's coaches are also eligible for bonuses. In soccer, a German player would have pocketed 400,000 euros for the TM title in 2022, for reference.
The DEB will invest the remaining funds in youth development. In contrast, the Swiss association gives all the money directly to the players - a good thing, as we aim to win medals at the World Championships in the future, too.
