Gathering of Education and Cultural Affairs Ministers - The number of freshers expected to increase in Thuringia by 2035

The Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (KMK) predicts that the number of freshmen in Thuringia will increase gradually until 2035 - from 8,800 in 2023 to 9,700 in 2035. However, this projection only encompasses universities and colleges supported by the Free State. The participation of private universities is considered at the national level.

The number of first-year students in eastern German states, not including Berlin, has been dwindling since 2019 and recorded a total of 45,245 in 2022 at state-run establishments. Back in 2019, there were 53,192 first-year students. The anticipated count for 2035 is 52,300. In Thuringia, there were 10,233 enrollees in 2019. The number dipped before rebounding in 2022.

For the entirety of Germany, the KMK anticipates an uptick from approximately 397,600 students in 2023 to 440,700 in 2035. Incorporating private universities, the number will climb from 477,900 to 526,200 in the same timeframe, according to the forecast. "This marks around 7,500 more than the previous peak year of 2011," it mentioned.
