The NFL suspends Denver Broncos DE Eyioma Uwazurike due to gambling infractions.

Defensive end Eyioma Uwazurike of the Denver Broncos has become the 10th NFL player to be suspended for breaking the league's gambling rules.

On Monday, the league announced that Uwazurike would be banned indefinitely for wagering on NFL matches during his rookie season in 2022. Before pleading for reinstatement, he must serve a year's cooling-off period.

The Broncos released a statement saying, "On Monday, we were informed by the NFL that Eyioma Uwazurike has been suspended indefinitely for violating the league's gambling policy." The club stressed their commitment to maintaining the game's integrity.

Colorado, where the team is based, has legalized sports betting. But the NFL does not tolerate its players betting on any NFL games. Recently, the NFL suspended five players, including four from the Indianapolis Colts and one from the Washington Commanders, for similar offenses. In June, three more players from different teams were given indefinite bans.

Nicholas Petit-Frere, a Tennessee Titan, received a six-game ban for wagering on non-NFL matches in a team facility.

Uwazurike, a fourth-round pick from Iowa State, participated in eight games last season, earning 11 solo tackles and 17 total tackles. It was thought that he would contend for a starting position this year. Matt Henningsen, a 2021 sixth-round pick, is expected to replace him.

New coach Sean Payton stated that the league issued new guidelines to ensure a clear understanding of their gambling policy and emphasis on its important. "The main problem isn't the policy, but the understanding and explanation of the policy," he said. "I presented the matter a week and a half ago, and now someone else will present it. I hope it won't be as confusing as the eight-page handout we received."

NFL players are not allowed to gamble on any NFL matches but can place wagers on non-NFL games in legal jurisdictions. Despite this, they are forbidden from betting in team facilities such as locker rooms or hotel rooms.

The Broncos were strongly tipped to win the Super Bowl last season after acquiring quarterback Russell Wilson in a trade with the Seattle Seahawks. However, Wilson experienced a poor first season with Denver, where he sustained various injuries. His performances did not match those of coach Nathaniel Hackett who got dismissed after a 51-14 loss on Christmas. The Broncos finished 2022 with a dismal 5-12 record, and Hackett now serves as the Jets' offensive coordinator.

Payton, who took over as head coach in late January, has a projected 8.5 win total for the Broncos this year, per a DraftKings prop bet. The AFC West is a notoriously challenging division. The reigning Super Bowl champions, the Kansas City Chiefs, have -165 odds to win the division. The Los Angeles Chargers (+340) and the Denver Broncos (+550) come in second and third, respectively, followed by the Las Vegas Raiders (+1200).

The Broncos have +4000 odds to win Super Bowl LVIII and +2500 to reach the AFC Championship for their first postgame appearance since Super Bowl 50 in 2015.
