The likelihood of Paris has grown higher. - The national coach commends losing players Lichtlein and Golla.
As the Olympic Games approach, an Icelandic coach looks at his team and is especially satisfied with the performances of two players.
In an interview with Sport Bild, the coach said, "As a national coach, I was first relieved that no one was injured, and then very impressed by Johannes Golla's performance at Flensburg. He was exceptional. But Nils Lichtlein also played well in the Berliners' final."
It's good to hear this from the team in Berlin, as the U21 world champion and MVP of the junior world championship is still trying to earn a spot on the Parisian team. Playmaker Juri Knorr (24, Lions) is seen as a sure thing. Marian Michalczik (27, Hannover) and Nils Lichtlein are fighting for the second spot on the team.
After the Euro Final4, Lichtlein said to the praise of his national coach, "That's nice, but unfortunately it doesn't help me now, given that we lost the final. Maybe in a few weeks, though."
His coach, Jaron Siewert (30), believes that Lichtlein should have a chance to go to the Olympics, but that decision lies with the national coach, who can only select 14 players. He said, "Nils has absolutely earned a spot, but the national coach will have to make that decision."
Siewert also mentioned, "If Nils could participate in the Olympics, it would be a great experience for him. He's definitely achieved a lot this season, and that's why I, as a coach, would be very happy."
Golla, on the other hand, has already secured his place. The national team captain, who's been flying under the radar, did well in the Euro final for Flensburg. He's a sturdy player who not only led Flensburg to a championship, but he also helps boost the team's chances for the Olympic Games in Paris (July 26th to August 11th) with this victory. Golla told Sport Bild, "Of course, winning the final with Flensburg makes me want more."
