The 2024 Cannes Film Festival will culminate in a grand finale. - The most memorable performances ever witnessed

The annual Cannes Film Festival came to a close last Saturday (May 25). The jury, led by Greta Gerwig (40), announced the Palme d'Or for the best film during the closing ceremony, while director and "Star Wars" creator George Lucas (80) received the Palme d'Honneur for his remarkable career. For two weeks, the Croisette played host to some of the world's biggest stars, showcasing both glamorous appearances and touching moments.

Emotional starting point

With Juliette Binoche (60) shedding tears, the festival began on a highly emotional note: as Meryl Streep (74) received the Palme d'Honneur for her lifetime achievement at the opening ceremony, the Oscar winner-actress was overcome with emotion. Streep tried to console Janine Binoche by placing her hand on her shoulder, yet to no avail. Despite the heartfelt moment, the next day, Streep joked about not receiving recognition at home, but instead being met with a "big tidal wave" in Cannes.

The often-composed Kevin Costner (69) was similarly moved by the festival's audience reaction to his western film "Horizon: An American Saga". Receiving an adoring eleven-minute standing ovation, Costner couldn't hold back his tears while wiping them away in the cinema. The dad of seven also had the pleasure of being accompanied by five of his children during the event.

A reminder of Cher's legendary past

At the amfAR Gala during the event, Demi Moore (61) set the tone by introducing the headliner as the one and only Cher (78) - a legend in her own right. Moore noted that the multi-award winner had won Grammy, Oscar, and Emmy awards, before hilariously demanding: "Do you have an Emmy in the room?" When Cher took the stage, the audience fell silent. She wore a tight, see-through ensemble that echoed her iconic outfit from her 1989 music video "If I Could Turn Back Time."

Lovebirds on red carpets

The glamorous red-carpet events are always an opportunity to flaunt love, and the Cannes Film Festival was no exception. Matthias Schweighöfer (43) and Ruby O. Fee (28) made for a stylish duo during the festival's opening ceremony on the lavish French riverside. Chris Hemsworth (40) and Elsa Pataky (47) gazed lovingly at each other at the "Furiosa: Mad Max Saga" premiere, while Richard Gere (74) also made a family affair by attending with his wife Alejandra Silva (41). Their son Homer James Jigme Gere (24) was present at the boisterous after-party following the screening of the critically acclaimed film.

Sienna Miller (42) was joined by her partner Oli Green (27) on the red carpet of "77th Cannes Film Festival," but her daughter Marlowe (11) especially drew attention - who had been taken to the red carpet by her famous mum for the first time.

Unexpectedly shocking scene

Expectations of glamor were exceeded when director Ali Abbasi's (43) "The Apprentice" proved to be a prime example of disturbing realism. The film fictionalized the early years of Donald Trump, starring Sebastian Stan (41) and Maria Bakalova (27) in the respective roles. The controversial storyline included a troubling scene of Trump sexually assaulting his wife Ivana (Bakalova) after implying he was no longer attracted to her. The scene, which depicted Trump undergoing liposuction and scalp reduction, left audiences in shock.

Highly-discussed occurrences

Kelly Rowland (43) made headlines herself when she got into a heated argument with a security guard on the stairs leading up to the Lumière Theater. Footage of the incident, shared on May 21, received wide attention. After walking up the stairs, the former "Destiny's Child" member had a verbal encounter with the security guard. "The woman knows what happened," she later clarified. "I know what happened," she declared, emphasizing that she never insulted or pushed any other women.

Formerly-controversial star Shia LaBeouf (37) also drew attention as he made a return to the limelight- attending the premiere of his "Megalopolis" without any prior scandals marring his public image. At Cannes, the actor appeared elegantly dressed in a tuxedo, seeming to have put his past behind him.

Fifty-year-old Heidi Klum made a statement on the red carpet at the opening ceremony of the Cannes Film Festival donning a stunning red gown, serving as the L'Oréal brand ambassador. Afterward, she attended the amfAR Gala with her 20-year-old daughter, Leni Klum. In her second attendance, Heidi wowed in a ball gown made of tulle, while her daughter Leni opted for a sleek black net dress.
