The LA Rams obtain free agent quarterback Carson Wentz.
The LA Rams recruited veteran quarterback Carson Wentz in the eighth week of the game to enhance their team. Wentz was considered the biggest undrafted player of the season. The week ten break gives Wentz extra time to learn the playbook and become familiar with new teammates.
Wentz's career boasts of a 46-45-1 record as a starter with three clubs and has a 62.6% completion rate, with 22,129 yards, 151 touchdowns, and 66 interceptions.
Wentz was brought in by the Philadelphia Eagles with the second pick of the 2016 NFL Draft. The Rams picked first in the draft, but instead, they chose Jared Goff.
Stafford's Injury and its Severity
In game week eight, Stafford from the Rams suffered a thumb injury on his throwing hand, which required a bye week to treat. Backup quarterback Brett Rypien faced the Green Bay Packers and the game resulted in a 20-3 loss. Rypien finished the game by making 13 of his 28 passes for 130 yards, 0 touchdowns, and 1 interception. With Rypien, the offensive created six points and zero touchdowns in just five quarters since his replacement of Stafford.
Stafford's condition was not severe enough to be designated to injury reserve, but he couldn't play in week nine due to his injury. McVay hinted Stafford might be ready to play against the Seattle Seahawks in week eleven.
If Stafford recovers sufficiently to play in week eleven, Wentz will play the substitute role. If not, it is likely Wentz may start in lieu of Rypien.
Last season, the Rams got Baker Mayfield as a backup when Stafford got injured and had multiple concussions. Mayfield was dropped by the Carolina Panthers and played the final five games for the Rams. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed him this off-season.
A Chance for Redemption for Wentz
Wentz's 35-32-1 record was accumulated in five seasons with the Eagles. Although the Eagles won a Superbowl in 2017, he was injured, so it was Foles who helped them to win Super Bowl LII.
Colts acquired Wentz through a trade in 2021, reuniting him with Frank Reich who was the Eagles' offensive coordinator before he moved on as the Colts' head coach.
Wentz played one season with the Colts, posting a 62.4% completion rate with season statistics of 3,563 yards, 27 touchdowns, and a career-best 7 interceptions in 17 games, resulting in a 9-8 record for the Colts.
The Washington Commanders signed Wentz as a replacement for the upcoming season. He had a 2-5 record in seven starts but spent time on IR with a broken finger on his throwing hand. He completed passes at a 62.3% rate, for 1,755 yards, 11 touchdowns, and nine interceptions for the Commanders.
Ahead of the playoffs, the Commanders released Wentz despite the two more years remaining on his contract.
Wentz made the short list of possible starters when Rodgers of the New York Jets suffered a severe Achilles injury in the first game. Wentz remained unselected until the Rams picked him last week.
Three-Game Losing Streak for Rams
The Rams fell to 3-6 this season after losing three consecutive games, their third-place ranking in the NFC West.
All-Pro wide receiver Cooper Kupp began the season on the IR due to a hamstring injury, but promising rookie and new wide receiver Puka Nacua had a wonderful first month.
Second-year running back Kyren Williams claimed his position as the team's number one runner before getting a high ankle sprain in week six. He is expected to return in week twelve, but the Rams' back positions are thin since they traded a dismayed Cam Akers to the Minnesota Vikings.
The San Francisco 49ers started the season with a 5-0 record, but they too dropped three successive games, tied with the Seattle Seahawks for first place in the NFC West, with records of 5-3.
The 49ers are the favorite to win the division with -320 odds, just ahead of the Seahawks at +255 odds, and the Rams at +3500 odds. However, the Rams are 2-1 in divisional matches for the season.
Post-break, the Rams have games scheduled with the Seahawks (Week 11), Browns (Week 13), Commanders (Week 15), and Saints (Week 16).
The Rams are set to play four more matches against teams like the Arizona Cardinals (Week 12), Baltimore Ravens (Week 14), New York Giants (Week 17) on New Year's Eve, and the 49ers (Week 18).
As of now, their chances of winning the Super Bowl stand at a meager +20000, with a higher probability of +1200 for clinching the NFC Championship.
When it comes to betting for Week 11, they are currently viewed as a +3 home underdog against their opponents, the Seattle Seahawks. This season, their record against point spreads shows a 4-4-1 balance.
