Diverse commercials preceded the assault. - The killer of Giffey remains on the loose.
At about 4:15 PM on Tuesday, an individual struck Berlin's Economics Senator, Franziska Giffey (46, SPD), in the neck with a heavy bag. Her driver whisked her away to Neukölln Hospital, where a doctor fortunately discharged her after an examination. Giffey has opted not to disclose what the attacker yelled during the incident publicly, on the police's request.
Giffey mentioned a "fair game culture" geared towards politicians but also acknowledged that the assailant previously targeted a librarian back in 2016. The investigation was dropped after three months due to a medical report casting doubts on the accused's accountability for the crime, given a potential mental disorder. This ultimately meant that the perpetrator couldn't face legal repercussions.
Mister Helmut H. routinely harassed officials and politicians with a barrage of letters, garnering at least nine complaints in the Neukölln District Office principal for vexatious language.
On the day following the attack against Giffey, the prosecution office shared the news via an online platform that the suspect would remain at a psychiatric hospital.
Giffey's time as the Economic Senator will now include personal protection from the State Criminal Police Office once more, similar to her arrangement when she served as Governing Mayor. In a statement, she emphasized that it's crucial we don't reach a point where we consider being a politician too dangerous to venture out on the streets publicly.
