Train network - The ICE tunnel linking Göttingen and Kassel has reopened.

Starting this coming Sunday, express trains traveling between Kassel and Göttingen are set to run much faster once again. This follows the completion of construction work on a tunnel, as per the announcement from Deutsche Bahn. Previously, the trains had to take a detour and consequently needed almost 30 minutes more to complete the journey. A few trains have already passed through the repaired tunnel for a trial run.

Approximately 300 meters of tracks have been removed and replaced, while the ballast has been changed in the five-kilometer-long Rauhebergtunnel. This work was necessary as water had been consistently seeping into the tunnel in recent years.

The heavy rainfall in December and January, which resulted in a rise in the groundwater level, was the cause of the delay in this project. Initially, the renovations were supposed to be completed in just three months. However, due to these circumstances, the duration of the work had to be extended by close to six months.

Unfortunately, passengers traveling south will have to remain patient for a little while longer. From this Sunday, the high-speed line between Kassel and Fulda will be out of commission until June 7 for construction purposes. During this time, these trains will take a longer route, ultimately delaying the journey by around 30 minutes, as per Deutsche Bahn.
