Different forms of life. - The head of the farmers' association states, "The wolf should be pursued."
Due to a recent wolf attack on a donkey in the Neuwied region, the President of the Rhineland-Nassau Farmers' and Vinegrowers' Association, Marco Weber, is urging for wolves to be hunted. There's been a significant rise in wolf-related incidents and livestock killings in northern Rhineland-Palatinate since the start of 2024, he stated on Tuesday. The wolf population needs to be "properly managed," he added, by specifically hunting the aggressive wolves through targeted shooting.
"The wolf needs to be hunted," Weber declared. The "soft approach" from the Environment Ministry in Mainz isn't enough anymore, he said. A more aggressive stance towards wolves is needed because they're becoming a major issue for livestock farming and the conservation of pasture farming in the low mountain range areas. No farmer wants to live in constant fear of wolf attacks.
The wolf is "a dangerous predator," Weber said. The "lighthearted attitude" toward wolves should end, as it doesn't reflect the reality on the ground. It's just a matter of time before a wolf attacks a human, which will cause a major uproar. We shouldn't let it get to that point, he warned. If wolves establish themselves in Rhineland-Palatinate, it will be too late to do anything about it.
The Lynx and Wolf Coordination Center detected a wolf around mid-April in the Puderbach municipality within the district of Neuwied, the same location where a donkey was injured.
