Advanced innovations transform the world we live in. - The head of the environmental parliamentary group advocates incorporating artificial intelligence into education institutions.
For supporting students with their homework or filling in any learning gaps, Andreas Schwarz, the leader of the Green Party's parliamentary group in Baden-Württemberg, advocates utilizing AI tutors in schools. He shares his belief with the German Press Agency in Stuttgart, "I'm convinced that an AI-backed tool on a smartphone could serve as an effective, personalized, multimedia tutor for students." His priority is to improve students' performance in reading, writing, and arithmetic by providing them with tailored support. "AI systems could act as a backup for teachers," he adds.
Schwarz envisions that the AI tutor would assist students on an individual basis. If a student held their smartphone over tasks like a system of equations, the AI tutor would suggest helpful tips via prompts like: "Where are you now?", "What could the solution look like?", and "Where can you find more information?". He further proposes that students may not even need to type, as they can verbally communicate with the AI tutor. "This is an even better approach to reach the student generation that's keen on voice messages", Schwarz states.
At the beginning of May, OpenAI, known for developing ChatGPT, demonstrated that this dream is not far-fetched. They launched a new version of ChatGPT equipped for conversing with the AI model. The enhanced ChatGPT boasts the capacity to process visual information captured through a smartphone camera. During the presentation, OpenAI exhibited how this new model helps solve mathematical equations, offering verbal guidance on the calculation method without disclosing the answer. An OpenAI employee used a smartphone camera to photograph an equation and then asked ChatGPT questions verbally - with the software responding by voice whilst observing the user's progress through its camera.
The Green parliamentary group leader emphasizes that this technology could assist in bridging educational disparities. Schwarz states, "Data from studies shows that such systems enhance educational equality, particularly for weaker pupils". The aid comes in the form of supporting students at home. "The AI tutor will address students in their language, align with their educational level, help them overcome learning gaps, and aid in deciphering complex tasks".
Despite data protection concerns, Schwarz promotes Baden-Württemberg as a frontrunner. "Our data protection officer should show a path to make this feasible", he proclaims. He explains that AI applications are now ubiquitous in various sectors and that it's vital to include these assistance tools in the education system.
The state data protection officer deems the use of these systems possible if certain conditions are met. "If no personal data is shared, there's no data protection issue", states a spokesperson for the authority. This can be attained with the assistance of intermediate technical systems.
The spokesperson agrees with the adoption of digital tools in the educational world, "Of course, digital tools are prevalent in the education sector these days." They provide an example of a plan to deploy "fAIrchat", a chatbot based on ChatGPT, through Moodle, a learning management platform. "We deem this an operational option for classrooms," the data protection officer's spokesperson concludes.
