To start the year off, Friedrich Merz, the CDU's federal chairman, shared his thoughts on the idea of forming a black-green coalition at the federal level. In an email to his supporters in February, he mentioned the possibility of collaborating with the SPD and Greens if a coalition with the FDP didn't pan out. "Definitely not an attractive option," he said, "but there has to be a governing majority in place."
