Does he have the large elephants as companions? - The head of state, an elephant, travels to Germany.

It's plain to see: The Green Party's long-time adversary is no longer under Berlin's control. The diplomatic crisis initiated by Environment Minister Steffi Lemke (56, Greens) regarding the limitation of hunting trophy imports without consulting the impacted countries has recently become more intense. This was mainly due to Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (65, SPD) disregarding two letters from the President of Botswana.

▹ A meeting with Botswana's Environment Minister Dumezdweni Mthimkhulu (45) in March ended disastrously, with Lemke stating there might have been erroneous arguments "without foundation" regarding President Masisi's elephant culling.

▹ Lemke's ministry suggested that the president's stance was questionable within the context of his own country. Former Africa diplomat Volker Seitz (81) deemed this a breach of diplomatic etiquette.

Could it be that the elephant president brought some big-game hunters with him?

The federal government's initial response to Masisi's deportation order, intended as a gift to Germany, was less than straightforward. The 20,000 elephants for Germany haven't been officially accepted yet. A spokesperson cited the lack of a donation agreement.

Botswana's ambassador John-Thomas Dipowe (60, l.) explains two letters that President Masisi had sent to the Chancellery to BILD reporter Sebastian Geisler (r.) at the embassy (Berlin-Lichterfelde) - without receiving a reply, as the Africans complain

Did the African carry the deed with him? There'd be enough space for it in Masisi's presidential jet (a two-engine Bombardier BD700 Global Express). However, transporting a large number of animals intercontinently would need cargo aircraft.

Repeated invitations from Africa to learn about animal protection in the region were dismissed by Lemke. Now the Botswana president comes himself...
