Border Control renames themselves as Customs. - The Harz Mountains celebrate Walpurgis Night with dress-up and live performances.
In the Harz Mountains, people geared up for Walpurgis Night, a celebration marked by live music, unique costumes, and a vibrant atmosphere. Daybreak on Tuesday saw several locals donning attires reminiscent of witches and devils, as a dpa photographer recorded in Braunlage, Lower Saxony. Crowds gathered as decorated tractors paraded around, and children rode on broomstick trailers. Witches and devils danced through the streets, while fireworks added to the festive mood.
Walpurgis Night in Saxony-Anhalt was a peaceful affair, as confirmed by Halberstadt's police. Similarly, Goslar's police shared their untroubled experience with the event. Unfortunately, police couldn't provide specific numbers regarding the attendance.
The southern Harz Mountains—Braunlage, St. Andreasberg, Bad Grund, and Hahnenklee—hosted multiple celebrations dedicated to Walpurgis Night. Additionally, Saxony-Anhalt has planned several events in places like Schierke.
Walpurgis Night draws its name from St. Walburga. Goethe, renowned writer, crafted the basis for the celebration's wild revelries with his "Faust" series, inspired by his 1777 ascent of the Brocken, or Blocksberg. Per historical beliefs, witches congregate on the Brocken on May 1st to frolic and party with the Devil while driving winter away and welcoming spring. This extravagant tradition is a significant tourist draw for the Harz Mountains.
