The Halle Merkur casino officially commences operation.
The recently opened Merkur Spielbank in Halle's Congress and Cultural Center, known as K&K, celebrated its grand opening under the slogan "Happiness for (H)all." The event attracted various musicians, Lord Mayor Dr. Bernd Wiegand, and gambling billionaire Paul Gauselmann, who is 84 years old.
Attracting Tourism to Halle
With a population of about 240,000, the city of Halle has been without a casino for more than five years. Now, the Merkur Spielbank is the third casino operated by the Gauselmann Group in the state of Saxony-Anhalt. The city is proud to have attracted this new establishment, considering it a significant tourist attraction.
The opening ceremony involved a ribbon-cutting ceremony, followed by performances from famous singers such as Oli P. and Marc Terenzi. Additionally, there were speeches and activities, including from city officials and Paul Gauselmann himself. Lord Mayor Dr. Bernd Wiegand stated that the Merkur Spielbank aligns with the city's positive development and appreciates the increased public demand for gambling opportunities. He considers the opening a testament to the city's achievements.
Gauselmann echoed the city's sentiments, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to establish a casino in Saxony-Anhalt. He highlighted how his group has doubled the number of visitors and their stays in four years.
Player Protection
Despite criticisms from gambling opponents, Gauselmann emphasized the importance of player protection throughout Europe. His group is committed to guiding gamblers towards better channels and ensuring they play within their means. He also mentioned that they record all transactions exceeding €2,000, with a view to intervening if necessary.
Updated Merkur Gaming Strategy
The new Merkur Spielbank in Halle employs a modernized business strategy featuring over 85 automated gaming machines, with an option to increase the number to 120. Some of the highlights include 3D slot machines, electronic blackjack, and roulette variants with higher betting and payout potentials. The casino also features a fully automated cash system with the use of tickets for deposits and withdrawals, primarily for security reasons. It also boasts enclosed smoking areas and an array of dining options. Gauselmann invested more than €4 million in the venue. David Schnabel, Managing Director of Merkur Spielbanken Sachsen-Anhalt GmbH und Co KG, praised the updated concept:
"We have reimagined and refocused the casino operating concept that has been common in Germany for decades. We are now the most advanced casino in Germany, and the results show that we are headed in the right direction."
Job Opportunities
Currently, the Merkur Spielbank in Halle provides employment for more than 20 individuals. Paul Gauselmann used the opening ceremony to advertise job opportunities within the Gauselmann conglomerate. To demonstrate his company's rich history, he led guests on tours of the adjacent German Slot Machine Museum, housing over 1,800 historical coin-operated machines, including his personal collection.
A week before the grand opening of the new casino, the millionaire entrepreneur hosted a celebration in honor of his life and the long-serving employees who helped him along the way. Staff who's been with Gauselmann for 25, 40, or even 45 years received acknowledgement: "It's a great pleasure for me to recognize our workers who've stuck with the company for that long," said Paul Gauselmann, who currently leads a billion-dollar enterprise with global reach. In Germany alone, the market share of his Merkur brand stands at over 40 percent.
