Gatherings or Events - The gathering commences for choosing the next SPD party head.
The Berlin SPD is currently undergoing a personnel reorganization. Over 260 delegates attended a party conference on Saturday to elect an entirely new leadership team. Martin Hikel, Neukölln's district mayor, and Nicola Böcker-Giannini, former state secretary for sports, have been chosen to lead the party. They successfully beat out a competing team consisting of Kian Niroomand, previous SPD state vice-chairman, and Jana Bertels, former co-chairwoman of the Berlin SPD women's party, with an impressive 58% of the votes in the second round of a member survey.
It's anticipated that the party conference will align with the aforementioned grassroots vote, with the new dual leadership set to replace current party leaders - Senator for Economic Affairs Franziska Giffey and parliamentary group leader Raed Saleh, who've been in office since 2020.
Outside the conference venue, a hotel in Lichtenberg, employees of subsidiaries belonging to the state-owned hospital groups, Charité and Vivantes, staged a demonstration. They rallied against wage disparities and pushed for equal pay among other hospital workers. Berlin's daycare center workers also participated in the protest, voicing their demands for their own collective agreement.
