The New VW California is now available. - The fuel filler flap is located inside the trunk.

The updated version is modeled after the recent VW Multivan, launched in 2021, and offers leading-edge safety and driving assistance features. It has expanded to a length of 5.17 meters (with an additional 27 cm), while its height remains at the convenient 1.99 meters.

The "Hotel California" edition comes in five choices: Beach, Beach Tour, Beach Camper (with a compact kitchen in the back), Coast, and Ocean (featuring a kitchenette at the driver's side).

Features two side sliding doors

This new generation features two side sliding doors as standard, making it more convenient for daily usage and particularly helpful for those in left-hand traffic countries. To accommodate the entryway, the kitchenette has been moved slightly to the rear. The standard awning can now be ordered either on the left or right. An optional sun canopy can also be added to provide shade on the opposite side.

VW has removed the rear bench seat, and passengers now sit on variable individual seats - all weighing just 24 kilograms, making them easier to install, convert, and remove. VW claims the new "Cali" can easily handle the balance between everyday VW bus and versatile camper.

Interior of the Coast: fridge drawer instead of top loader, also accessible from the outside via the sliding door, plus sink, gas hob and plenty of storage space. Front seats swivel, the rear seats run on rails

The latest camper van is also equipped with smart features: occupants can control crucial camping functions and monitor the levels of the water tank, battery, and so on through the infotainment or the California app.

The lower lying surface measures 1.98 by 1.06 meters. In the Beach Tour - without kitchenette - it is larger

Confusion with filling up water

Interestingly, the water filler is placed on the inside from the outside. Inexperienced campers often mix up the opening for water with the one for the fuel tank - undesirable and now impossible.

The California now offers a partially electric option for the first time! It's a plug-in hybrid, always with all-wheel drive and a 245 hp system power, joining the roster of available drives for this latest edition - capable of towing trailers up to 2000 kilograms. A gasoline engine (204 hp) and a diesel (150 hp) are also available.

The California line is set to be available for ordering starting in June, with the first deliveries expected for the second half of 2024. Regarding the cost, it remains a secret for now. The previous model began at around 63,700 euros, so it's unlikely to decrease in price - but perhaps VW will avoid an increase.
