The Kuntz blueprint for HSV - The freshly appointed manager has a two-year window to ascend within the company.
Stefan Kuntz, aged 61, had a great welcome at the Volkspark. While he was in his car traveling to the relegation game between Bochum and Düsseldorf in the afternoon, he shared a message on Instagram, "Thank you to everyone for the amazing reception!"
Earlier Kuntz, who is the new sports director of HSV, met the club staff in the press conference room in the morning. There were sandwiches and the atmosphere was pleasant. Kuntz ("I won't be bringing any employees with me at the moment") addressed the staff, emphasizing his intention to build upon the existing team.
He plans to work with the leadership (Baumgart, Costa, and Hrubesch) and office staff. Kuntz mentioned, "It was wonderful because I was able to talk to the staff. I saw a lot of warmth and politeness."
The team has been in the lower division for seven years, making it the second division's longest-standing team. After the promotions of FC St. Pauli and Holstein Kiel, no club has stuck around for as long.
Kuntz has high expectations for the team's future, stating, "It would be amazing if we were in first place, second place, or third place on matchday 30, or even if we could reach these positions. At that moment, you can really make a difference. In general, I want HSV to be part of the Bundesliga. I see the necessary conditions."
In spite of being an outsider to the team, Kuntz has already talked to Baumgart twice, and traveled with Costa to Bochum.
Kuntz shared, "I'm already well acquainted with the situation. I know the ideas that have been developed. I know Steffen's ideas. We'll discuss a bit more about what an effective philosophy can ultimately look like. But there will be no Stefan Kuntz team or a Steffen Baumgart team. Instead, there will be an HSV team that we believe can earn promotion."
Kuntz has a meeting with team captain Sebastian Schonlau (29) scheduled for Friday. The next action will be focused on matters related to personnel planning: "Some players have exit clauses (Benes, Glatzel, Reis, ed.). I will contact them and their agents as soon as possible."
The ex-coach of 1. FC Kaiserslautern (2008-16) also had a conversation with youth academy boss Horst Hrubesch (73). He said, "Horst was my sports director at the DFB. He stood up for me. You don't think I'm going to sit down here without speaking to Horst first."
As Kuntz took up his new job, he was reminded of his past experiences with HSV. In the old Volksparkstadion, he had some problematic experiences: "Then every time you went into that dead-end swimming pool, you drove eight hours back home for zero points."
Smiling at the memories of the old HSV legends, he added, "How about we bring that old HSV feeling back with the current team..."
