Unique chance to make history - The firstfemalecoach in men's sports approaches a significant title triumph.
Sabrina Wittmann, aged 32, broke new ground as she was appointed the first female head coach in the history of German men's professional soccer on Thursday. She is set to take over from Michael Köllner at third-division club FC Ingolstadt and will make her debut at home against Waldhof Mannheim this Sunday at 7.30 pm (MagentaSport). Three weeks later, she could win her first trophy with the FCI!
Wittmann stands on the brink of historic success in men's soccer. On May 25, FC Ingolstadt is set to face Würzburger Kickers in the final of the Bavarian Toto Cup. The club lost to Illertissen (3-4) in the previous final. Things might just work out better for them with Sabrina in charge.
Even if they lose, ingolstadt FC will still qualify for the DFB cup next season. Will Sabrina Wittmann still be running the show?
The interim head coach has already been offered the role permanently but is yet to make a decision. Despite the uncertainty, she appeared unafraid of the challenge. "I never even thought about not taking it," she said.
Sports director, Ivica Grlic, didn't eliminate the possibility of a permanent deal. "We never say never. Part of my job is to explore the coaching market and have conversations with potential candidates. We'll see how things pan out."
A relaxed Wittmann is raring to go for the last four games of the season. She's not worrying about her future beyond that. However, with three wins and a title, she'd have a strong case to continue leading the team at FC Ingolstadt.
Nonetheless, she wants to continue on her journey in men's soccer. In August, she plans to apply for the UEFA Pro License, which is mandatory for coaches working in the third division.
