Emotional conversation during the BBL. - The emotional response of Vechta's coach
After experiencing a loss, Vechta's coach Ty Harrelson (43) is heading to Ulm. When questioned about his emotional state by Dyn reporter Arne Malsch in an interview, the American coach couldn't help but admit, "You've got me now." His eyes glistened with tears as he shared: "I'm just grateful, I'm just happy to be in this situation. I left the US to find a job in Germany."
His voice wavered, and Harrelson had to wipe away tears multiple times. The outpouring of emotions continued: "There's no crying in basketball," he shared through the dyn mic, attempting to gain composure.
He was quoting - slightly altered - a line from the movie "A League of Their Own" featuring Tom Hanks.
Harrelson gained recognition as a player in the second division during the 2000s, playing a total of five years with teams in Langen, Bayreuth, and Osnabrück.
He said, "It's slightly sad to hear the song here for the last time, to experience the crowd here one last time. I have fond memories from here, even though it was just a two-season stint as a coach."
The Texan native guided Rasta to the Bundesliga in the previous season as champions. And even more remarkably, leading them to the playoffs!
Harrelson: "I can't think of anything else to say"
"I gave it my all," he explains his emotional state. "I did take a chance by returning. However, I loved playing here, admire the nation, embrace the culture. I don't know what else to say except thank you."
It's an emotional departure. Many Rasta fans were emotional as well, shedding a few tears. Harrelson's successor will be Martin Schiller. It won't be an easy legacy for the Austrian to follow the influential and successful Texan.
