The initial celebrities he conversed with - The DFB meeting with Steinmeier: a recap
With less than two weeks until the start of the home European Championship, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier (68) offered his well-wishes to the team and coach Julian Nagelsmann (36).
The DFB meeting with Steinmeier
Late Wednesday afternoon, a police-escorted car with the diplomatic license plate "0 - 1" arrived in front of the German training camp hotel "Spa & GolfResort Weimarer Land" in Blankenhain/Thuringia. DFB President Bernd Neuendorf (62) and Director Rudi Völler (64) welcomed Steinmeier outside. They took a formal handshake and an enthusiastic embrace before entering the hotel.
Steinmeier first spoke with the team's council led by captain Ilkay Gündogan (33), who then addressed the rest of the team, many of whom wore DFB training gear. Coffee and cake were served.
Other attendees included DFB Vice-President Hans-Joachim Watzke (64), who left the meeting early to take care of his Bundesliga duties, having the Champions League final between Dortmund and Real Madrid on Saturday (9 p.m.).
Steinmeier began by sharing, "Big football tournaments excite us all, including me, especially when they're in our own country." He went on to say, "My impression is that the ambition is immense. I urge so many Germans to wholeheartedly support the players in their quest to become European champions."
Steinmeier's insight about the team was positive, describing how they've shown a significant improvement, had a smooth preparation, and were in prime form after the Bundesliga season. "I am very optimistic that this will be a great European Championship," he said.
Interestingly, after providing political support, Neuendorf requested divine intervention: "The Federal President will continue his journey to the Church Congress in Erfurt from here. We hope that he will ask for support for us there, in a figurative sense, at a higher level."
Even though they've received the backing of the President, the team and coach remain focused on the upcoming tournament. Their dedication and passion for football will undoubtedly be on full display during the event.
