The casino floor at Ellis Island in Las Vegas is being expanded

Ellis Island, a family-owned casino resort one block east of the Las Vegas Strip, is expanding its casino operations. The expansion will add 6,415 square feet and include a new sportsbook and back-of-house area, according to Clark County planning documents.

"This renovation gives us the opportunity to create an elevated gaming and entertainment experience while respecting our history and heritage," Ellis Island Vice President of Development Christina Ellis said in a statement.

The hotel's official name remains the Ellis Island Hotel, Casino and Brewery, although in November 2022 the hotel closed the brewery, which it had operated since 1993, in preparation for expansion. According to "Vital Vegas" blogger Scott Roeben, the brewery was the largest in Nevada at the time.

“Ultimately, the footprint of Ellis Island and its casino was too small to accommodate a brewery,” Robben wrote. “It’s a charming facility, but given the limited space, expanding the casino floor and adding a new restaurant was a better decision.”

Ellis Island was opened by Frank Ellis in 1967 as The Village Pub. The Ellis family, which still owns Utah's Silver Reef Brewing Co., changed the Las Vegas casino's name in 1985 when a dozen country bars appeared around Las Vegas.

In 1997, Ellis Island completed its first renovation and expansion, a $12 million project that doubled the number of slot machines to 410, introduced table games, and added six more Stand at eleven o'clock.

In 2014, a new hotel was added to Ellis Island, and a Super 8 was added adjacent to the hotel, and its guest rooms were renovated in 2018.

Ellis Island is owned by Frank's son Gary Ellis and his wife Cindy. Christina is her daughter. Her sister, Annamarie Ellis, serves as vice president of operations. Her sister, Michaela Ellis, runs human resources.
