Two decades of EU expansion. - The Brandenburg Gate in Berlin is illuminated.

On the 20th anniversary of EU expansion, Berlin shows its support by lighting up the Brandenburg Gate. The German capital joins a European Commission initiative to showcase the event throughout Europe on May 1st. Significant buildings in cities like Paris, Rome, and Budapest will also be lit up with the colors of the EU flag. The Brandenburg Gate will glow from sunset to midnight.

Kai Wegner, Berlin's Governing Mayor from the CDU party, stated, "The 2004 enlargement was a pivotal moment in EU history, as it was the largest expansion yet and helped solidify a unified Europe. This once-in-a-century event not only promoted peace but also positioned Berlin at the heart of the EU. By lighting up the Brandenburg Gate, we honor and celebrate this significant moment in European history."

On this milestone date, ten countries joined the European Union. These countries include Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Malta, and Cyprus. Romania and Bulgaria later became EU members on January 1st, 2007. Most recently, Croatia welcomed membership on July 1st, 2013.
