The Big Ten Conference is considering relocating its football championship game to Las Vegas.
Recently, the rapidly enlarging Big 10 Conference is pondering shifting its football championship game's location, and Las Vegas is supposedly one of the spots being thought about.
The game, which has been put on in Indianapolis since its beginning in 2011, would take place at Allegiant Stadium, the property of the NFL's Las Vegas Raiders. The $1.9 billion stadium, which opened in July 2020, has already built connections to college football as it is where UNLV competes and acts as the site of the Las Vegas Bowl.
The Big 10 has requested submissions from places. Obviously, we are eager to participate, will put our greatest effort forth, and believe there is no superior location for their football championship," Steve Hill, the head of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA), stated in an interview with the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
Allegiant Stadium has hosted the Pac-12 championship game for several years, and will serve as the venue for that conference's last conclusive clash this year. The 108-year-old, illustrious conference, whose glory has decreased due to other leagues stealing its members in the latest round of expansion, has also held men's and women's basketball tourneys in Las Vegas.
Pac-12's Expansion Gives Focus to Big Ten Movement to Vegas
The Big 10, named inaccurately, is currently made up of 14 universities. But next year, the number will rise to 18.
This is because UCLA and USC, the schools that put the final nails in the Pac-12's coffin, along with the Universities of Oregon and Washington, are joining the Big 10. There's also the belief that the Big Ten might have sympathy on the Pac-12's Berkeley and Stanford and invite them to join the league.
Even if that doesn't transpire, the Big Ten's shifting west increases the relevance of Las Vegas as a possible home city, even if on a rotating basis, for the conference's football championship game.
Furthermore, there's a buzz that the league will grab the Pac-12's automatic berth for the Las Vegas Bowl, further fortifying its connection with Allegiant Stadium and Sin City.
Potential Moves for Big Ten Championship Game in Las Vegas
As Hill told the Review-Journal, it's plausible the Big Ten is chatting with other cities, meaning it's not a guaranteed conclusion the league will have a football championship game in Las Vegas.
If Allegiant Stadium hosted a Big Ten title match, the best situation for filling seats and boosting visitation to the city would be a pairing of either UCLA or USC (considering the closeness) against the Big Ten's renowned brands: Michigan, Penn State, and Ohio State.
Despite this being a "perfect world" scenario for a Big Ten title game in Las Vegas, it's no guarantee in any given year. Amid expansion, the league is dispensing with divisions, meaning in some years, the conference title game could be a rematch of a regular season fixture.
In these instances, the two teams with the best records, regardless of location, will compete.
