Colin Tizzard's racehorse Sizing Tennessee has scored a stunning win in the Ladbrokes Trophy, surpassing his opponents by a convincing margin. The horse, trained by Tizzard, overcame recent issues with its legs to put on an unforgettable performance at the UK's second most significant hunt race.
Sizing Tennessee and jockey Tom Scudamore secured the victory, leaving the competition far behind with just a short distance remaining. Impressively, Elegant Escape, with Harry Cobden in the saddle, was also a whopping seven lengths clear of the other riders. The ten-year-old son of the hunting stallion Robin des Champs emerged as a surprise victor in Fontwell's race earlier this year and has since maintained his impressive form.
A poignant win for jockey Scudamore
The win holds special significance for Tom Scudamore. In the lead-up to the race, the 36-year-old British jockey had to cope with the loss of his grandfather, a family matriarch in the Ledbury region and a legendary figure in the area. His death came just weeks before the race.

The historic races
The Ladbrokes Trophy, previously known as the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup, holds the position of the longest-running commercially-sponsored race in British history until it was acquired by Ladbrokes Coral in February 2017. It dates back to 1957, with Mrs. Peggy Hennessy, a member of the sponsoring family, witnessing the debut of Mandarin, the race's first winner. In 1960, the race relocated from Cheltenham to Newbury. Peter Scudamore himself has claimed victory twice at the Gold Cup, back to back in 1988 and 1991, with Strands of Gold and Chatam respectively. Tom Scudamore repeated the feat in 2008, riding Madison du Berlais to success.
This year marks the 63rd edition of the traditional three-mile event with 21 hurdles. The steeplechase forms the climax of the Ladbrokes Winter Carnival, an annual event in Newbury that takes place between November and December. The riders and their horses complete two full laps of the one-century-old racecourse, covering a total of 5,225 meters.
A race steeped in history since 2017
In 2017, Ladbrokes Coral announced they would be hosting the Ladbrokes Trophy going forward. Founded in 1886, this London-based gambling giant is among the oldest names in the industry. They previously owned the European Hilton Hotels business and operate many well-known casino brands and bookmakers. In the past, the group has attracted attention through various mergers and acquisitions. For instance, in 2015, they acquired Gala Coral's business and rebranded as Ladbrokes Coral. Shortly after, they became a part of the GVC Holdings conglomerate for a £4 billion takeover. GVC Holding, which had also recently acquired Bwin, obtained 53.5% of Labrokes' shares in the deal.
In 2019, the revered race celebrates its 63rd anniversary, with the Bellhouse Stakes and the Ladbrokes Trophy slated for the month of November. The event remains a momentous part of the Ladbrokes Winter Carnival, a weeks-long spectacle held in Newbury.
