Quick medical assessment at a distance - Telehealth emergencies will assist in easing the pressure on rescue units.
Telemedicine services were trialed in the Goslar region and found that in nearly half of all emergency doctor visits, their physical attendance was not required. Instead, virtual treatments could have sufficed according to Nadja Weippert (41, Greens), a state parliament member. Average wait times for emergency doctors at the scene were approximately 25 minutes.
The state aims to launch a tender to acquire the software necessary to implement a state-wide tele-emergency system. The goal is to have the technology operational by the end of 2025. The question of which control centers in Lower Saxony will house specially trained tele-emergency doctors remains undecided.
The state's Emergency Medical Services Act reform was unanimously endorsed in parliament on Wednesday. Minister of the Interior Daniela Behrens (56, SPD) is certain that telemedicine applications will become essential in aiding emergency response services in the future.
CDU politician Alexander Wille (51) also weighed in, explaining, "Tele-emergency medicine will enhance patient care while also offering crucial assistance to emergency professionals." He emphasized the need to address the ongoing shortage of specialists in the field using innovative approaches like this one.
Though it may take until 2029 for the new system to be adopted on a broader scale.
