Teenager, aged 14, perishes in London due to sword assault; perpetrator apprehended.
One unfortunate update was made by Bell: a 14-year-old boy succumbed to his injuries after being taken to the hospital. This event was described as "very sad" and "horrific" by Bell.
Fortunately, the conditions of the other four injured - including two police officers - were not life-threatening. Two of these individuals remained in the hospital for treatment.
The police ended up receiving a call just before 7 a.m. (8 a.m. CEST) from locals in the Hainault district of northeast London due to reports of people being stabbed near the subway station of the same name. Bystanders claimed the man had attacked random passers-by and two police officers.
It took officers 22 minutes to capture a 36-year-old man who was armed with a sword. He was subdued with a stun gun, providing yet another piece of the puzzle in this unsettling ordeal.
Photographs and videos spread online, courtesy of the British media, captured the man in question - clad in black trousers, a yellow hoodie, and sporting a thin beard - brandishing what looked like a samurai sword. As police vehicles arrived, he could be seen waving the weapon while running around houses.
Residents reported hearing the man scream. A local shared with the PA news agency that she saw someone lying on the ground from her home. The perpetrator had asked the police officers aloud, "Do you believe in God?"
The case is still in its infancy, with Bell confirming that there were no additional suspects being looked for. Bell commended the bravery of the police officers and other emergency services.
Mayor Sadiq Khan expressed his deep sorrow over the situation, working closely with top police leadership. Khan graciously honored the dedication of the officers and first responders who braved potential danger to help others.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak also responded with disdain to this "shocking incident." He extended his thoughts to all those affected and their families in a statement. "Violence like this has no place on our streets," proclaimed Sunak.
Earlier this week, the Prime Minister had criticized the surge in crimes involving stabbing weapons in the capital city. Last year, official statistics revealed a 20% rise to 14,577 cases of this nature.
