Chilling instant - Targeting testicles in German handball league matches.
The German team VfL Gummersbach has pulled off an impressive victory in the Liqui Moly Handball Bundesliga as they defeat SG Flensburg-Handewitt 34:27. This is their first win against the European Cup winner in the past 18 years!
VfL Gummersbach's recent wins extend beyond just this game, as they even managed to push THW Kiel aside, securing the sixth position in the league and a chance at the European League. However, this win comes with a slight setback for Flensburg as they risk slipping to third place on the last matchday on Sunday.
Early in the game, a painful moment occurred in the fourth minute. Gummersbacher player Giorgi Tskhovrebadze went for the ball, but unfortunately accidentally hit Flensburg player Emil Jakobsen in the groin with his knee. Jakobsen collapsed to the ground, holding onto his injured area. Referee Tanja Kuttler came over and patted him on the shoulder, quipping, "It's not a foul!" before allowing the game to continue.
The visiting team started out strong, leading 6:4 (8), but the home team caught up and even took the lead with a better start in the second half, going up 18:15. Unfortunately for them, Flensburg went five whole minutes without scoring a goal and there were even whistles from the crowd at one point.
With five minutes left, Gummersbach held a comfortable lead of 30:25, eliciting silence from the audience.
Miro Schluroff from Gummersbach shared his thoughts after the game, saying,"This was a game we could never have dreamed of. Everyone is already looking forward to the summer break. We're thrilled to have made it to Europe."
Simon Pytlick from Flensburg conceded the defeat, stating, "This wasn't the ending we planned for. We didn't have any more energy left. We wanted to win our last home game, that was our aim. Kudos to Gummersbach - they were better than us today."
A ten-hour bus journey due to traffic jams didn't seem to affect the Gummersbach players, as they orchestrated a beautiful game and came out on top. Coincidentally, this game also marked the last full-court shot under the Gürtelline, as Johannes Golla from Flensburg hit fellow teammate and National Team colleague Julian Koster's sensitive area while trying to swat him away during the skirmish.
Flensburg is now facing the risk of dropping to third place as they endure their second home defeat of the season. Meanwhile, VfL Gummersbach can bask in the joy of their victory and their latest European League qualification.
