"For two weeks, he wrestled to survive." - Sylvie Meis' "Let's Dance" dance partner passes away at the age of 46.
Sylvie shared on Instagram, "Along with Christian, I found my way back into a fresh chapter in life after being diagnosed with cancer. He was a source of joy for everyone who knew him. My thoughts are with his family and loved ones... With deep condolences."
Based in New York, Bärens had been a trainer at the well-known dance studios "Stepping Out Studios" for more than a decade. A friend informed the Cologne "Express," "Unfortunately, yes. Bärens has recently passed away."
This source states that Bärens was admitted to the intensive care unit of a hospital in Brooklyn at the end of April. Irena Canova, a close friend of Bärens, shares, "He fought for his life for two weeks but sadly succumbed and passed away on May 14th." Irena is now setting up a fundraiser on "Gofundme" to bring Bärens back to Germany for his burial, as his mother is German.
Throughout his successful career, Bärens performed in numerous shows, including the North American tour of "Dancing with the Stars," "Sabado Gigante," and the 2008 Academy Awards. Fellow dancer Vanda Polakova, a participant of the Slovak "Dancing with the Stars," posted on Instagram, "I'm heartbroken. You will be missed by so many."
In 2010, Bärens temporarily went back to his homeland for Germany's "Let's Dance" show, partnering with Sylvie Meis. After just six shows, he had to withdraw due to back problems. Christian Polanc (46) replaced him. The pair Meis ended up finishing second, with Sophia Thomalla (34) and Massimo Sinató (43) taking the title for that season. Bärens' appearance on this German dance show was his only one.
Now, Bärens is the sixth member of the "Let's Dance" family to have passed. He is now joined by Eralp Uzun (31), Achim Mentzel (69), Daniel Küblböck (36), Tim Lobinger (50), and Heide Simonis (80) in their eternal resting place.
