Switch Your iPhone's Default Maps App Using This Add-On
On your iPhone, you're able to switch the primary browser, yet you can't alter the default maps app - officially. This is inconvenient for those who prefer using applications like Waze that boast better traffic data and various other features. For instance, navigation hyperlinks in iMessage open in Apple Maps, and links in Google Search open in Google Maps. However, there's a method to cause maps links in Safari to launch the desired mapping app.
This functionality is due to a quick Safari extension dubbed Map Redirect for Map Links. Utilizing this, you can cause any maps hyperlink to open in either Apple Maps, Google Maps, Waze, Bing Maps, or HERE WeGo Maps. If you find diverse mapping apps advantageous for different purposes, you can establish the extension to inquire about the app you'd like to utilize every time.
Configuring the Map Redirect Safari Extension
To begin, install the Map Redirect for Map Links app from the App Store ($1.99) onto your device. Launch the app and follow the instructions to set it up in Safari. To turn it on, navigate to Safari, tap 'Aa' once a page has loaded, select 'Manage Extensions' at the top, and activate Map Redirect.
Head back to the 'Aa' menu in Safari and select 'Map Redirect' to adjust the app settings. You'll have several options here: you can select your desired target app, causing any maps link to open in that app by default. If you appreciate versatility, you can make the extension inquire about the app you'd like to use each time you click on a link. If you later decide to shift default apps, simply return to these settings.
