A city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Hattingen, plans to transform it into a new settlement for asylum seekers. But the opposition is not coming from its immediate vicinity of "Steinenhaus." Instead, it's the regular patrons of the establishment who are fiercely protesting.
A petition online to save the club has already garnered close to 600 signatures by Friday afternoon. It reads, "The club has brought many people together and provides a safe space for expression and discovery." It is a significant social gathering spot, "A loss for our community if it vanished."
We are not against hosting refugees - we can identify a different building for that, stated the residents. "It's the finest swingers club in NRW," says a visitor, and another person adds, "Tolerance is prominent here."
The city hall of the Ruhr area city insists that the decision to close the club lies solely with the property owner who is also the owner of the club. "We haven't imposed any prohibitions. We couldn't even if there was a permit for the operation," added the city's spokesperson.
"The owner wishes to sell the property and quit the business," confirmed the spokesperson. "We are interested in the property and have already seen the building. There was also a refugee shelter there before."
At present, Hattingen's refugees are being housed in containers. However, the club's operations continue. A Wort event on Friday is already completely reserved, as per the site.
