Swedish Twitch streamers promoting unlicensed online gambling sites raise concerns about potential ban in the country.
A recent investigation by Swedish television network Sveriges Television AB revealed that eight out of ten influencers on the streaming platform Twitch have been promoting illegal online casinos. This could lead to a possible ban of the platform in Sweden if no action is taken.
In a report by gaming magazine Dexerto based on the Kulturnyheterna program on Sveriges Television AB (English article), it was found that these Twitch streamers were engaging their audiences by showing gameplay and involving their community. Some even asked their viewers to help choose stakes, while others urged them to register with the illegal gambling providers.
The streamers also offered incentives to their audience by issuing bonus codes that could be used to unlock extra credit or benefits.
Twitch's ongoing battle against gambling content
Twitch has always been dedicated to removing unauthorized content from its platform. In October 2022, they banned gameplay from gambling providers that are not allowed in the US, leading to a 75% decrease in gambling streams. However, with so many forms of prohibited gambling, it's difficult for Twitch to monitor everything.
Last year, the platform also banned certain CS:GO gambling games. There are constant complaints about content on Twitch, and the platform has to comply with regulations in the countries where the streamers are based.
Spelinspektionen remains silent
The Swedish Gambling Authority (Spelinspektionen) has not commented on the issue, despite being directly contacted by Kulturnyheterna. According to the Swedish Gambling Act, advertisements for unlicensed gambling content are illegal. Consequences are expected to follow.
As of now, it's unclear whether Twitch or the streamers are responsible for broadcasting the content. However, if Twitch fails to control the actions of its content creators, it might face a complete ban in Sweden.
