Suspected drunk driver kills two state troopers on Interstate 15 in Las Vegas
The Nevada State Police (NSP) is mourning the deaths of two police officers killed in the line of duty on Interstate 15 in Las Vegas on Thursday. The officer was struck by a suspected drunk driver in the northbound lane of the highway near D Street.
The soldiers were identified as Sergeant Michael Abate and Trooper Alberto Felix. One passenger died at the crash site. Another person was pronounced dead at University Hospital.
At 3:23 a.m., police stopped on the highway to check on a driver who had apparently fallen asleep in his car. Another vehicle then hit the officers and the driver fled the scene, according to police. The vehicle was later found at an apartment complex near J Street and Monroe Avenue in Las Vegas.
The driver, Jemarcus Williams, 46, was arrested at the apartment complex and charged with two counts of reckless driving causing death, driving under the influence causing death and failing to stop at the scene of an accident causing death.
He was being held at the Clark County Detention Center and remained in custody Friday morning.
The crash temporarily closed portions of Interstate 15 and the U.S. onramp. Highway 95 to Interstate 15.

According to Fox News, Abate joined the NSP in December 2013 and was promoted to sergeant last month. Felix joined NSP in January 2019 after previously serving in the U.S. Air Force.
Children are believed to have survived in both cases.
"Sergeant Abate and Officer Felix dedicated their careers to Nevada with extraordinary dedication and pride," the NSA said in a statement. "Nevada State Police would like to express our condolences to the families of our fallen heroes. , friends and colleagues offer their deepest condolences."
Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson responded to the scene.
It is a terrible tragedy that these soldiers lost their lives in this manner," Wolfson told the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo, the former Clark County Sheriff, also expressed his condolences for the deaths of the two officers.
"I am deeply saddened by the loss of two of our brave Nevada troopers in Las Vegas early this morning," Lombardo said in a statement. "This is a great loss for Nevada law enforcement, Las Vegas, and This is a devastating loss for our city and our entire state. As we mourn these soldiers, we will never forget their heroism, valor and sacrifice."
Soldier's previous death
Also in 2021, 46-year-old Nevada State Trooper Micah May was struck and killed by a driver on I-15.
The suspect in this incident, Douglas Claiborne, 60, was shot and killed by police on the highway. Clyburn reportedly reached for May's gun as other officers opened fire. He led officers on a high-speed chase before the fatal crash.
