Suspect in Las Vegas Cannibalism Case Found Fit for Trial
A man accused of murdering someone and later admitting to eating their eyeball and ear was proclaimed fit for trial by a judge in Las Vegas. The case against Colin Czech, a 29-year-old vagrant at the time of arrest, will be progressing to a criminal trial following the judge's decision.
Two mental health experts evaluated Czech, concluding that he comprehends the charges against him and is capable of assisting his legal team in his own defense. Clark County District Judge Christy Craig made this proclamation on Friday, as per the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
David Westbrook, Czech's defense attorney, had sought the psychological assessment.
Westbrook expressed his sentiments on the case previously, stating, "The allegations are obviously very serious," referring to reports of Czech consuming the eyes and ears of the victim, according to KSNV. "And what we've all read in the papers and seen on the news is very shocking."
Czech is currently languishing in the Clark County Detention Center, with no bail set for his release yet. The next court event will transpire on June 5 to tackle the murder charge.
On April 28, Czech assaulted the victim, identified in the news as Kenneth Brown, in a vicinity close to Las Vegas Boulevard South.
Testimonies by bystanders reveal Brown falling to the ground from this violent encounter. After assaulting the victim, Czech allegedly forced his head into the hard pavement repeatedly, per an eyewitness account.
Munching on the Victim's Face
Accounts state that Czech began to nibble on Brown's face. Czech later acknowledged that he had eaten the victim's eyeballs and ears, during his discussion with law enforcement.
Czech shared with the police that he was hearing voices in his head during this episode, allegedly having not slept for a five-day span before the incident, according to KLAS.
The authorities noted that Czech had "biological matter" on his hair, mouth, and clothing upon arriving at the crime scene.
Brown was taken to a hospital, where doctors confirmed his death. Physicians examining Brown found a considerable wound on his head and absent eyes and ear from his cranium, as per KLAS.
Ongoing Investigation
The victim's body underwent an autopsy at the Clark County coroner's office. The authorities have yet to disclose the specific reason for Brown's passing or even confirm his true identity. It remains uncertain what initiated the dispute between the two men.
The crime scene lies near the Las Vegas Arts District.
