Suspect in Gilgo Beach Case Unlinked to Atlantic City Homicides

Officers in New Jersey's Atlantic County claim they cannot find a connection between the killings at Gilgo Beach on New York's Long Island and the slayings of four women in Egg Harbor Township in the West Atlantic City region.

Although the arrest of Rex Heuermann last month on charges of being involved in the Gilgo Beach homicides brought about the prospect of a breakthrough in a similar case in Atlantic City, investigators have yet to find a link between the two. For some time, there has been speculation about a potential relationship between the two spates of murders.

On Tuesday, William Reynolds of the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office stated that detectives had held meetings with their counterparts in Suffolk County, New York to analyze the timelines, dates, and methodologies of both incidents.

At the moment, ... there appears to be no association between the suspect in the Gilgo Beach case and the killings in Atlantic County from 2006," Reynolds said.

"The 2006 case continues to be an ongoing joint investigation between ACPO and the Egg Harbor Township Police Department, with continued support from our local, state, and federal partners," he added. "Authorities will continue to investigate all leads until the person responsible for those crimes is brought to justice."

Horrific Event

In November 2006, the bodies of four sex workers – Barbara Breidor, 42, Kim Raffo, 35, Tracy Ann Roberts, 23, and Molly Jean Dilts, 20 – were found in a drainage ditch behind the Golden Key Motel on the Black Horse Pike in Pleasantville, New Jersey.

The bodies had been there for varying durations of time, ranging from one week to several months. All four were barefoot and seemed to be arranged so they pointed towards Atlantic City.

The Golden Key was one of several low-rise motels established on the north side of Black Horse Pike in the 1950s to offer a more affordable alternative to lodging in Atlantic City. By the year 2000, these motels had gained a reputation for depravity and violence.

In 2015, the township used a $3 million grant from the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority to purchase the motels, including the Golden Key, which was subsequently demolished.

Heuermann in Court

In the meantime, Heuermann, the Long Island architect and suspect in the Gilgo Beach murders, attended his first court hearing on Wednesday. He has been implicated in the killings of Melissa Barthelemy, who disappeared in 2009, as well as Megan Waterman and Amber Lynn Costello, who vanished in 2010.

He is also a suspect in the death of Maureen Brainard-Barnes, who went missing in 2007. Nearly 20 individuals are thought to have been found dead across Gilgo Beach on Long Island's South Shore, spanning the years from 1996 to 2011.

Heuermann, 59, was apprehended on July 13rd when investigators traced his pickup truck to one seen nearby when a woman disappeared in 2010. Officers retrieved his DNA from a discarded pizza box.

In addition, authorities in Las Vegas are examining cold cases for any potential ties to the suspected serial killer.
