Weidel's regional association encompasses all locations. - Surprise result for the AfD in the upcoming federal election.
The situation for the Alternative for Germany (AfD) in Baden-Württemberg remains dismal. A recent poll indicates that if state elections were held immediately, the right-wing populists would secure just 14% of the vote. This marks a significant decline from their 20% score in September of last year.
The major factors contributing to this downward trend are the Russia and China scandals that have plagued the party. Conducted by Infratest dimap on behalf of SWR and Stuttgarter Zeitung, the survey reveals that a whopping 74% of respondents in the south-western state believe the AfD needs to reassess its ties with Russia and China. The party's popularity has also plummeted on a national scale, recording a one-year low of 17% in the latest Sunday trend. This marks a drop of six percentage points since the beginning of the year.
Meanwhile, Manuel Hagel's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) enjoys steady support, topping the poll with a healthy 36% in the southwestern region. The Green Party of Minister President Winfried Kretschmann (75) remains unchanged at 22%.
The Sahra Wagenknecht alliance is another winner, with the Left receiving 4% in the survey - narrowly missing the 5% threshold required for representation in the state parliament. The Social Democrats (SPD), on the other hand, show a two-point increase to 11%, while the Free Democrats (FDP) are unaffected at 7%.
Interestingly, two-thirds of Baden-Württemberg residents express great interest in the upcoming local and European elections. For around 18% of these respondents, the reception of migrants is their main concern for local authorities. 43% believe the AfD offers viable solutions to this challenge through immigration restrictions.
However, the AfD's popularity also remains low at the municipal level, even in Alice Weidel's (45) home state. In the upcoming local council elections, the party has managed to assemble candidate lists in only 156 municipalities, while withdrawing from larger cities like Tübingen due to insufficient candidates.
