Twenty-three-year-old midfielder Immanuel Pherai has announced his decision. He's been with Hamburg SV (HSV) under contract until 2027. Throughout his youth career, he's represented the Netherlands' junior teams, from U15 to U19, earning a total of 38 appearances.
Pherai now plans to play for Suriname. After thoughtful discussions over the past fortnight, he's been invited to join the national team of this small South American nation with a population of 620,000 people on its northeast coast.
The Dutch coach Stanley Menzo (60) has selected Pherai for the first time. Suriname will compete in the second round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against St. Vincent Grenadines (5.6.) and Anguilla (8.6.).
Suriname's most famous player is Sheraldo Becker (29), a striker who played for Union Berlin for four and a half years before joining the Spanish first-division side Real Sociedad San Sebastian last January.
