Racehorses Undergoing Gender Transformation - Super mare Flamingo Girl has been neutered, turning into a gelding.
Flamingo Girl, once a record-breaking racehorse, is now classified as a "gelding" in the racing association's database. Despite her femalesexual organs and her feminine appearance, Flamingo Girl cannot compete in races for mares alone.
The reason for this unexpected classification is that male sexual organs were unexpectedly found in her abdomen. After their removal, horses are considered geldings by definition, regardless of the presence or absence of a penis.
A twisting fate
The secret about Flamingo Girl's unconventional gender came to light during a doping test after her win in the "Premio Elena e Sergio Cumani", a prestigious 1600-meter race in Rome on September 19, 2021. Italian officials found that she had unusually high levels of testosterone.
The race's winnings of 32,000 euros were not paid, and her victory was annulled. But the German stable owner, Henk Grewe, claimed he was unaware of any wrongdoing. After a veterinary examination in Hanover, it was discovered that the horse was producing its own male hormones—it was a hermaphrodite!
This presented a problem, as hermaphrodites aren't recognized as a category in racing. Hermaphrodites don't have their own competitions, so Flamingo Girl's potential as a racehorse suddenly became pointless.
Passing through surgery and Dubai
After her abortion, Flamingo Girl was sold and began racing in Dubai. However, she didn't succeed there.
Her owner, Stefan Hahne, a software entrepreneur, then exercised his right to buy her back. Flamingo Girl is now returned to Grewe's Cologne stable. Grewe explains, "Flamingo Girl's gender may not be conventional, but she is now officially recognized as a gelding and can compete in Germany. She'll need some time to get back into shape, but we're looking forward to seeing what she can do."
Two years after Flamingo Girl's controversial win in Rome, the bonus was paid out. Her win was ultimately considered fair as she produced her own testosterone.
