Super Bowl spectators in Las Vegas to get bus service after deal with drivers
Just days before Super Bowl 58 at Allegiant Stadium, Transportation Workers in Las Vegas have agreed to a tentative contract.
Bus drivers and mechanics have threatened to strike if they don't get an acceptable offer.
Avoid Super Bowl Impact
This could cause confusion for the Super Bowl and many of the 330,000 expected spectators in the days leading up to this legendary event.
Public buses are one of the only options for tourists and residents to get around Las Vegas.
A particularly concerning issue regarding the Super Bowl, according to union members, is that authorities have no plans to allow taxis, Uber or Lyft vehicles to operate near Allegiant Stadium.
Employees at many Las Vegas hotels, casinos and restaurants also rely on public buses to get to and from get off work.
But officials announced Saturday that the driver and mechanics had agreed to a temporary contract following recent negotiations.
Transdev, which provides public bus service to the Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) of Southern Nevada, and Associated Transportation Union (ATU) Local 1637 have been negotiating an agreement for months.
The deal still requires approval by about 1,200 rank-and-file union members. A previous proposal was rejected by staff in January.
Details of the new contract have not been disclosed to the public.
The new deal comes ahead of Super Bowl week, which comes as a relief.
"We appreciate the service our ATU members provide to the community and look forward to shifting our focus to moving passengers safely and securely throughout Las Vegas, including during the coming week," said Ron Bushman of Transdev Region. All eyes are on us during the Super Bowl," the vice president said in a statement.
Occupational Safety
In addition to pay levels, bus drivers are also worried about job safety. Between March and September 2023, there were 17 violent acts on RTC buses.
Drivers have been spat at, punched and assaulted on bus services, among other incidents of violence, according to the union.
Kickoff for the Super Bowl is 3:30 p.m. PT. Usher will be the halftime man for this game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers.
The Culinary Union has threatened to strike on Monday if an agreement cannot be reached between Las Vegas' three remaining hotels and hotel workers.
