Sunset Station Casino employees ask culinary union to stop representing them
More than half of the approximately 600 union workers at the Sunset Station Hotel and Casino reportedly want Culinary Union Local 226 to become their labor representative.
Station Casinos, the owner of the property, announced Monday that employees are signing a "decertification" petition. As a result, the company said it has withdrawn its recognition of the culinary union as the collective bargaining representative for workers at the Henderson, Nevada, plant.
The decertification petition was previously signed in 2020 by a majority of workers at the company’s other two facilities: Boulder Station and Palace Station.
"Like our Boulder and Palace crews, our Sunset crews also spoke. Scott Kreeger, president of Station parent company Red Rock Resorts, said in a statement." Station Casinos respects their decision and of course appreciates the trust our team members have placed in us. "
UNIONBREAKING CLAIMS
In a statement released Monday, the Culinary Union alleged that Station Casinos was involved in the union fight.
“The Culinary Union will file an unfair labor practice lawsuit over the withdrawal and will continue to demand that the company negotiate the union contract in good faith,” Culinary Secretary and Treasurer Ted Pappageorge said in a statement.
Anti-unionism is abhorrent and the Culinary Union urges Station Casinos to do better," he added. "Station Casinos have a long and shameful history of anti-employee behavior and losses. "
In 2019, 83% of Sunset Station employees voted to join the Culinary Alliance. A total of 437 Sunset Station employees participated in the vote.
"This was the only official vote ever held on the estate and it was overseen by the federal government. Workers voted overwhelmingly in favor of unionizing," Papachi said.
An election must be held
To date, workers have not participated in the decertification elections. The vote could result in employees formally giving up their union membership.
Unless a majority of the votes cast in an election support union representation, the union will be decertified,” the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) website states.
To hold an election, at least 30 percent of union workers must sign a card or petition asking the NLRB to hold such a vote.
The Culinary Union also claims that the 2020 elimination of union representation at Palace Station and Boulder Station was illegal.
The Culinary Workers Union Local 226 and the Bartenders Union Local 165 represent approximately 60,000 workers in Las Vegas and Reno. This includes housekeepers, cocktail and food servers, porters, doormen, cooks, bartenders, and laundry and kitchen staff.
