Upon assuming the role of educators. - Students receive 1400 euros monthly from the university.

Starting this fall, Otto von Guericke University in Magdeburg will be providing a salary for its students. The amount depends on their degree; Bachelor's students will receive 1400 euros per month, while Master's students will get up to 1540 euros. However, there's a catch. These trained teachers must work in a school within the state for at least five years.

The stimulus for this pilot scheme is the acute shortage of teachers, with Saxony-Anhalt lacking around 800 teachers, primarily in secondary schools in rural areas. In the initial phase, 30 students are planned for the program. This figure could increase to 20 extra spots for lateral entry master's degrees from the winter semester of 2025/2026.

Potential subjects include German in combination with ethics, chemistry, or technology as well as mathematics along with chemistry, technology, or physics. The university also plans to add computer science in the coming year.

The duration of the dual study program, from Bachelor's to Master's degree, spans five years. Each year, students have the opportunity to select their future school. From the third semester, they should spend one day at their chosen school each week. On the Master's course, there are two mandatory school days. Additionally, it's ideal for them to complete their apprenticeship and subsequently teach there.

Eva Feußner, the Education Minister of Saxony-Anhalt, explains that the model project applies specifically to secondary schools in the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel region and the districts of Stendal, Börde, and Jerichower Land.

Applications can be submitted online from May 15th to July 15th on the website of the Ministry of Education.
