Burglar became trapped inside the vehicle - Stolen vehicle in Berlin, apprehended on a rural route in Saxony
In Berlin, a man stole a black Alfa Romeo Giulia worth over 50,000 euros from Griegstraße on Friday. He seemed to be heading home, but was soon spotted by police on the B 115 near Görlitz. The officers tried to stop the suspicious car, but the driver sped off instead.
According to a police spokesperson, the fugitive sped south at a high rate, traveling through Markersdorf before ending up in front of a construction site in Sohland am Rotstein. The driver locked himself inside the stolen vehicle and refused to come out, so the police had to break a window to arrest the 46-year-old man. The car was later retrieved by a towing company.
Upon investigation, it was discovered that the man did not have a driver's license and was also under the influence of amphetamines. A blood sample was taken for analysis. The criminal investigation department is now taking over the investigation.
Unfortunately, car theft is a big problem in Berlin. In 2023, the police recorded nearly 40% more of these crimes than in 2022, with around 7,800 cases in total. Approximately 21 vehicles disappear from the city's streets, squares, and garages each day. Comparing the years 2021 and 2022, there was an increase of over 30%. The police have three special investigation groups: "Westwind" (founded in 2009), "Biber" (2011), and "Klone" (2020) to help combat this issue.
Remember, always be careful and vigilant, especially when it comes to your vehicle's safety.
