A sense of guilt lingering for 52 years - Stolen pitcher: Thief sends Hofbräuhaus 50 dollars.
For years, tourists have been sneaking Hofbräuhaus beer mugs out of Munich, tucking them into backpacks or hiding them under clothing. These large, one-liter mugs are popular souvenirs among Americans and Chinese visitors.
A senior citizen from the US state of Wyoming, known for its Rocky Mountains, once took a stone jug during a visit to Munich in 1972 as a college student.
Feeling Guilty
However, he now seems to be plagued by guilt. He sent a letter to Hofbräuhaus admitting he stole the mug during his trip. Included in the letter was a fifty-dollar bill.
"I'm sorry I left the Hofbräuhaus with a blue-colored stone stein bearing your 'HB' logo," the writer apologized. "I took it without paying."
He still possesses the mug but understands that he needs to make amends.
A Small Price
Despite the historical significance, these old beer mugs aren't incredibly valuable. Ranzinger believes the fifty dollars should more than cover the cost.
In addition to receiving a beer voucher and an invitation to the Hofbräuhaus, the American thief may also receive a sense of satisfaction from righting his wrong. Although the address was accidentally added to the envelope, it will hopefully lead to a pleasant interaction between the brewery and the penitent pilferer.
Donating the Money
In the spirit of charity, the Hofbräuhaus plans to use the fifty dollars to purchase school bags for underprivileged children during the summer.
The Hofbräuhaus response to Gregory K., the anonymous thief: "We hope you continue to enjoy the Stein-Krug, and we will donate the fifty dollars."
