Radical Ideologies - Steinmeier comments on Sylt: degradation of political etiquette.
The German Federal President, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, has voiced his worry about the deteriorating political conduct in Germany, following a video of young partygoers on the island of Sylt engaging in racist chants. Speaking at the annual democracy festival in Bonn on Saturday, he remarked, "Recent incidents like this video from a bar on Sylt only strengthen my concern."
He elaborated, "It's worrying because it's not just the marginalized or disenfranchised who are radicalizing; this is happening in certain areas of mainstream society as well." This underscores the importance of the majority of democracy supporters in Germany to uphold and enhance democracy and maintain polite behavior to facilitate democratic growth.
A clip that circulated on Thursday, allegedly taken over the Pentecost weekend, captured young adults lustily singing racist slogans set to the tune of Gigi D'Agostino's cult 1990s dance track "L'amour toujours." Their lyrics included "Germany for the Germans – foreigners out!", sung with uninhibited enthusiasm and abandon. One individual can be seen making a gesture mimicking the Nazi salute. Amazingly, none of the bystanders seem troubled by the scene.
