Radical ideologies - State agency investigating anti-Semitism initiates research project

Due to rising anti-Semitism, the Hessian State Office for the Protection of the Constitution (LfV) plans to study in a fresh investigation how Jew hatred might prompt alliances amongst extremists with diverse beliefs. Anika Schleinzer from the scientific research center "Anti-Semitism and Xenophobia" shared at Wiesbaden on Tuesday that both right-wing and left-wing extremists have participated in pro-Palestinian protest actions since Israel was assaulted by the Islamist Hamas. Anti-Semitism serves as the "connective tissue" between various extremist movements. Gaining knowledge of potential partnerships is crucial to identify potential hazards early.

Interior Minister Roman Poseck (CDU) heartily endorsed the research project "Anti-Semitism as a transversal phenomenon" while touring the LfV. This study is the focal point of the Hessian initiative "No place for anti-Semitism." There were several pro-Palestinian protest activities in Germany in response to the Hamas offensive on Israel on October 7, 2023. Schleinzer stated that she intends to analyze slogans, posters, and addresses, among other things, to identify if there is a convergence between actors from distinct extremist groups due to shared anti-Semitic viewpoints.

"Anti-Semitism has become unsettlingly visible again due to the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel," Poseck remarked while referring to the 2023 Hesse police crime report. In 2022, there were a total of 347 anti-Semitic crimes recorded, reflecting a significant jump from the previous year. Poseck added that a large number of the crimes occurred during gatherings. As per LfV President Bernd Neumann, the study's initial findings will be revealed in autumn.
