Stake.com Includes African Warriors Fighting Championship in Sponsorship Roster
A well-known Australia-based sports betting and iGaming company, Stake.com, is once again in the news. They recently signed a sponsorship deal with the African Warriors Fighting Championship (AWFC), allowing them to introduce their platform to the African market.
The AWFC, known for organizing Dambe - a form of boxing originating from Nigeria, will now receive support from Stake.com. This deal follows Stake.com's previous sponsorship of the UFC and Nigerian UFC champion Israel Adesanya.
Through this partnership, Stake.com will get extensive exposure during AWFC events, with their logo appearing on uniforms, arenas, and possibly even in various scripts. Additionally, they'll benefit from AWFC's digital platforms, utilizing the content related to Dambe.
The Attraction of the AWFC
Maxwell Kalu, a retired Nigerian soccer player, founded the AWFC in 2019 with the goal of creating global awareness about Dambe. This native fighting style has garnered immense popularity in Nigeria and beyond, drawing in hundreds of millions of online viewers.
At its core, the AWFC aims to improve the well-being and safety protocols of Dambe. This ancient sport may be steeped in tradition, but it's also in need of modern regulations. The organization has taken on the task of standardizing Dambe rules, ensuring the safety of fighters and the continuance of the sport itself.
Kalu commented on the new partnership in a statement, stating that he intends to use it to strengthen the workforce associated with Dambe across the continent. He also sees the deal as having great potential for raising awareness about the unique sport.
The AWFC intends to impact the growth of Dambe significantly with this new sponsorship deal. Kalu views it as an ideal platform to broaden the sport's fanbase through its rich history, memorable battles, and distinctive combat techniques.
Akhil Sarin, Stake.com's Director of Acquisitions, shared his thoughts on the deal, seeing it as a remarkable opportunity for the company. He believes the sponsorship allows Stake.com to highlight Dambe while establishing themselves as pioneers in sponsoring combat sports.
A Closer Look at Dambe
Dambe is an unusual sport that doesn't have an exact equivalent in modern fighting organizations. Fighters use one hand, wrapped in cloth, as a "spear," while the other serves as a "shield." They primarily rely on their dominant hand as a weapon. They can also use their legs to attack or defend.
The "shield" (the non-dominant hand) is commonly held with the palm facing the opponent. In some cases, it may be used to grab an opponent or suppress them.
The AWFC Dambe championship consists of three rounds. Victory is achieved by either knocking down the opponent or forcing a hand, knee, or back to touch the ground.
Though Dambe has been around for centuries, it's only gained recognition on a national level in Nigeria in the past few decades. In 2019, the country announced plans to create a national league, and since then, Dambe has attracted global attention.
