Much financial gain is involved. - St. Pauli earns a megabucks climax.
"Following the game comes the game. Our goal is to be champions."
St. Pauli's Quest for the Championship
In monetary terms, the 2nd division champions will receive an incredible €2,083,478 more in TV money than the runners-up (€31,554,879) in the upcoming Bundesliga season. That's a significant sum in the world of professional soccer.
By Wednesday afternoon, Hürzeler and his team will be fully focused on their championship mission. Not only from a financial standpoint but also from a sporting perspective, they don't want to be perceived as influencing the relegation battle.
Interestingly, if St. Pauli wins this weekend in Wiesbaden, they could potentially aid their long-standing rival FC Hansa Rostock - of all teams - in maintaining their spot in the league through relegation.
Hürzeler has proven time and again not to be swayed by such factors. As he puts it, "We want to be champions. It makes a difference if your contract states 'promoted team' or 'second division champions.'". This achievement would further elevate his CV as well as those of his players.
For St. Pauli, with a history so rich in culture and football passion, the trophy cabinet is rather empty. They've been champions just once in 1977 in a now defunct two-tier 2nd division, and four times in the third-tier Regionalliga.
If the title is secured on Sunday, the championship trophy, often referred to as the "hubcap," won't be presented on the pitch but rather at the closing ceremony on Monday, handed over by DFL managing director Steffen Merkel and Ansgar Schwenken, a member of the DFL management.
