Excited winners celebrate in the neighborhood. - St. Pauli acquires a hubcap.
What a craziness!
For several days, the St. Paulians have been organizing a massive celebration. In between, they still make time for sports success. They even managed to bring the second division title to their neighborhood with a 2:1 win in Wiesbaden.
The prize: the championship trophy, engraved with the club name FC St. Pauli for the first time.
First, they attended a reception by the Senate in the town hall, followed by a party parade towards Spielbudenplatz with open party floats. While the floats make their way towards the Reeperbahn, accompanied by thousands of fans, the upper deck is filled with high spirits. Beer is flowing freely, flags are waving, and songs are being sung.
In the meantime, the fans fireworks at the same time as the "Jolly Roger" is being lifted. Bengalos are also being lit on the floats. Johannes Eggestein expresses his joy: "It's an incredible feeling, I can't describe it in words. I've never experienced anything like this before."
When the team arrives at Spielbudenplatz, tens of thousands of fans are waiting in front of the stage. The real trophy is only presented on the party stage.
HERE St. Pauli gets its hubcap!
At 5:50 pm, the champion team takes the stage. Each player gets a winner's medal. Injured defender Philipp Treu takes over moderation from a media employee, Lena Gruninger, and calls out each player's first name. The fans respond with their surnames - and shout "Football God!" for Irvine in particular, who's celebrated for several minutes. Treu announces his coach Hürzeler with the words: "The best coach in the world!"
At 6:14 pm, the DFL Managing Director Steffen Merkel and Ansgar Schwenken, a member of the DFL Executive Board, hand over the coveted trophy to captain Jackson Irvine amidst cheers from the fans. Everyone is then allowed to hold the hubcap in their hands.
Hürzeler also speaks again, despite a weakened voice: "The championship is something incredibly special. I felt the significance of this championship trophy more and more towards the end."
And to the fans: "You are responsible for this team's promotion. Let's make it big in the 1st division too!"
The celebrations continue into the evening and even into the night, both on stage and in the Schmidt Theater, where the team continues its party marathon.
