Sportsbooks in Louisiana Enjoy Their Best Month Ever

In September, sports betting in Louisiana hit a new high, breaking records for sportsbook revenue and tax revenue from sports wagering.

The Louisiana Gaming Control Board revealed that sportsbooks made around $41.8 million in total revenue from mobile apps and physical locations. This surpasses the previous record of $37 million set in December 2022. The state also collected approximately $5.3 million in tax revenue, exceeding the previous record of $4.4 million from December 2022.

This wasn't a surprise, as predictions suggested that college and professional football would drive up the numbers.

Ronnie Johns, the chair of the Louisiana Gaming Control Board, mentioned this during the October meeting: "I think it demonstrates how significant football, college football, and the NFL are to sports betting. We'll keep an eye on these figures."

The LGCB's data shows approximately $280.1 million was wagered on sports in Louisiana at both retail locations and mobile apps. This is the second-highest monthly figure since sports betting was introduced in the state in 2021.

Mobile Betting Hits a High Note

Mobile sports betting saw a 44% increase in September for the state's nine mobile operators, accumulating $248.8 million. This is about $110 million more than August. These wagers led to a 447% year-over-year increase, generating approximately $36 million in net proceeds.

Donna Jackson, a supervisor with the Louisiana State Police's gaming audit section, noted this during the LGCB meeting: "This is the most significant monthly revenue generated from mobile sports wagering since it began."

Mobile sports betting kicked off in February 2022.

The state's 18 retail sportsbooks saw a 0.8% drop in wagers. However, net proceeds improved from the previous year. The total wagers amounted to $31.2 million, with net proceeds at $5.7 million.

Acknowledging Queen Casino's Success

Ronnie Johns, the chairman of the Louisiana Gaming Control Board, also praised the Queen casino in Baton Rouge for a substantial increase in their gaming winnings.

According to the Queen of Baton Rouge, their gaming income almost doubled in September, making it a successful first full month after their riverboat moved to a land-based casino in September.

"I'd like to applaud the Queen here in Baton Rouge for their fantastic first month. They achieved remarkable success during this period," Johns commented. "It demonstrates what land-based properties can achieve. And it's interesting to note that the Baton Rouge market expanded by almost $3 million from the previous year, which wasn't a result of other players losing out."

The Queen opened on the 24th of August.
