Choices made - Spicy showdown against the ex-coach.
After completing 33 matchdays, Hamburg Towers secured the second spot. Meanwhile, Braunschweig and Bamberg, positioned 12th and 15th respectively with records of 15-18, couldn't move ahead of them in the direct comparison.
Hamburg barely managed to keep their spot when they faced Göttingen at home. Mark Hughes, a top scorer, scored the first three points for Hamburg within just 44 seconds. The underdogs, Göttingen, tried to catch up after that but failed drastically. The quarter ended with Hamburg leading comfortably with a total of 40-27.
Ninth-placed Bamberg had a chance to secure tenth spot, but they needed a win in Oldenburg. Before the game, Bamberg had a 23-16 lead over their opponents. However, it was clear that Hamburg's lead would make no difference for Bamberg's chances of progressing, as the only way they could jump over Hamburg was through the direct comparison.
Hamburg, determined to secure their position, continued their dominating game until the end of the third quarter, leading 55-38. Hamburg's victory over Göttingen left Bamberg with no real hope.
Some clarity was also present in the race for seventh spot. Bonn's victory against Ludwigsburg by a score of 87-60 ensured that they had home court advantage against the MHP Giants.
The next part was intriguing. The second play-in game entailed a face-off between Pedro Calles' current team, Oldenburg, and his former team Hamburg. He had left Hamburg to join Oldenburg in 2022 to seek better prospects. Now, his former team stood in the way of his dreams.
The play-ins are set for the 14th and 16th of May, with the playoffs starting on the 17th. The live coverage will be broadcasted by Dyn.
