Spanish gaming market revenue continues to hit new highs

The Spanish gaming industry has experienced several periods of strong growth, and the second quarter of 2023 was no exception. Casinos and sportsbooks are welcoming more customers, with the second quarter being one of the best quarters for the industry since the COVID-19 pandemic.

Gross gaming revenue (GGR) for the quarter was €312.61 million ($333 million), according to the latest report from the Directorate General of Gambling Regulation (DGOJ, by its Spanish abbreviation). An increase of 2.52% from the previous quarter and an increase of 55.06% from the same period last year.

These improvements come after activity stalled in the first two quarters of 2022. A significant improvement in the latest figures follows a 5.5% year-on-year decline from Q2 2021 to 2022.

Online Casino Takeover

Recent growth in GGR has come primarily from two segments of the industry. Casinos control 47.94% of GGR, with a total share of €149.86 million ($159.67 million). This not only highlights the continued importance of land-based gambling in Spain, but also how previous COVID-19 measures have actually affected their business.

Another industry that saw an increase in revenue was sports betting, with revenue of 133.31 million euros ($142.04 million). Accounting for 42.64% of total gaming revenue, a month-on-month increase of 2.07% and a year-on-year increase of 118.9%.

It also appears to address concerns that parts of the land are at risk of extinction. This was the claim made last October by the Spanish Association of Gaming and Arcade Entrepreneurs. but it is not the truth.

Compared to the previous quarter, traditional sports betting increased by 1.81% and live sports betting increased by 3.47%. Horse racing betting increased by 22.67%, while other odds betting fell by -15.08%.

Poker Chips Down

Despite Spain's popularity as a venue for events such as the European Poker Tour, World Poker Tour and more, poker's performance during the quarter was mixed. The third segment contributed the most to GGR at €25.7 million ($27.38 million), accounting for 8.4% of GGR but down 5.84% sequentially.

At the same time, this is also an increase of 27.57% compared to the second quarter of last year. Tournament poker is down 2.77% and cash games are down 13.58%. However, the annual changes are positive at 38.12% and 4.85% respectively.

The DGOJ contains data on how much the gambling industry spends on marketing, with €96.64 million ($103 million) being the magic number. This includes €12.29 million ($13 million) in affiliate fees, €1.22 million ($1.3 million) in sponsorship fees, €48.96 million ($52.16 million) in promotional costs and €34.17 million ($36.4 million) in expenses. advertise.

In terms of the number of players, the average number of monthly active game accounts was 1,134,993, a month-on-month decrease of 2.04%. This figure represents an increase of 11.43% from the second quarter of last year. The average number of new users per month was 102,804, a decrease of 7.71% month-on-month and a year-on-year decrease of 2.96%.
